Lately there has been a lot to do about a leak in the Microsoft operating system: the so-called Windows Metafile (WMF) image. What's it all about?
What can happen?
When activated an attacker can execute arbitrary code on your system by means of a, for the purpose, crafted Windows Metafile (WMF) image: so it's important to know it's activated by means of an image !! Once activated, there's no saying about what will happen.
How is it activated?
Important to know, it cannot activate by itself. This means users have to be persuaded to do so by clicking an image:
1. by visiting a special prepared website. You have to click on a link to do so.
2. by clicking on a link in an e-mail or open an attachment that exploites the vulnerability.
How to PROTECT yourself?
Several things:
1. Microsoft recommends:
- Do not logon with administrator rights;
- Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date;
- The Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) can also help protect;
- Windows Live Safety Center can be used with the Complete Scan to check for and remove malicious software that take advantage of this vulnerability.
